A shoe specialist is a technician who has trained in the manufacture of shoes. Some have additional training in customised shoes. Shoe specialists work with orthotists, podiatrists and physiotherapists to assess and prescribe appropriate footwear for a variety of conditions and then manufacture the shoes.

Some people with physical disabilities are likely to be referred to a shoe specialist when off the shelf shoes from regular stores are not meeting their needs. It is a good idea to always have an orthotist, podiatrist or physiotherapist involved in the assessment and prescription of the shoes.
