Respite services

If you are a parent or guardian of a person with a physical disability who has complex needs, it can be a very demanding role. Respite services are available to families to allow them to have a break from their role as a carer. It also allows people with a disability the option of accessing their local community.

Many people with physical disabilities and their families can struggle with the idea of respite. With time, most people and their families grow to enjoy the respite support and the break knowing that it is the best way to look after everyone’s wellbeing.

There are two types of respite:

  1. Non residential respite can be provided as:
    1. In-home assistance to support the person with a disability undertake typical daily activities
    2. In-home assistance that provides the family member with a break
    3. Out of home assistance which can include accessing individual activities, alternate family settings or other flexible respite options
  2. Residential respite can be provided as:
    1. Centre-based or shared living settings
    2. Accommodation in time of immediate need

To find out whether you are eligible, more information on respite services and a directory of service providers or to find your local co-ordinator to talk about your options go to the Government of Western Australian Department of Communities, Disability Services website or the National Disability Insurance Scheme website.
