GP

Finding a GP is your first step. A GP close to home may be best however it is important to find one that:

  • Has rooms that are accessible for you to enter
  • Works on days that you can attend
  • Is likely to be able to see you when something is urgent
  • Is confident to communicate with you
  • Is confident to seek the supports you require
  • Has a keenness to understand you and your disability needs
  • Has an understanding of the common medical problems of adults

Start by researching the GP practices in your area. Many GP practices have their own website and detail what their interests are. The only way you’ll know if you’ve found the right one for you though is to book an appointment.

If you have complex needs, especially with regards to communication, always book a double appointment. This gives the GP more time to spend with you to discuss your needs. If you need help to communicate your needs, always take someone who knows you and understands what those needs are. It is difficult for everyone involved if the person supporting you doesn’t know enough about you.

Once you have a GP, any other specialist referrals can be arranged by your GP.
