Transportation
It is strongly recommended that wheelchair occupants transfer out of their wheelchair, onto a vehicle seat and use the vehicle seatbelt system and this is generally the safest mode of transport.
If this isn’t possible or practical, there are a range of wheelchair restraints and occupant restraints available for transportation of people while seated in their wheelchair within a modified vehicle.
For people who need to stay seated in their wheelchair for transport, it is strongly recommended that the wheelchair used complies with Australian Standard AS/NZS 3696.19 “Wheeled mobility devices for use as seats in motor vehicles”.
Due to the complexity of this equipment, please consult with your occupational therapist and registered installer to ensure you are selecting the most safe and suitable option.
Equipment includes:
- Wheelchair restraints and docking systems
- Occupant restraints
Driving
There are various modified driving controls available, some examples can be found here. You might require a driving assessment to decide which modifications would be best for you.
