Transfers
A thorough assessment of your needs and the environment is necessary when deciding on the most suitable transfer or manual handling method and equipment.
The aim of using any transfer or manual handling equipment is to increase independence in the task and reduce the risk of injury to the individual and/or support person.
Equipment includes:
- Transfer boards
- Swivel cushions
- Slide sheets
- Standing hoists
- Mobile hoists
- Ceiling hoists
- Slings
Hoists:
Hoists provide a mechanical means by which a person with limited mobility can be moved or transferred from one place or position to another.
A hoist may be needed when the transfer puts too much strain on you or your support person and there is a risk of injury.
The different types of hoists include standing hoists, full body, mobile hoists, ceiling hoists and multipurpose hoists.
Anyone considering the use of a hoist should receive manual handling training from an occupational therapist or physiotherapist prior to using the equipment to prevent injury.
